Surrounded by miles of suburbs, the Plains Conservation Center is an outdoor education center located in Aurora, Colorado. Owned by the Aurora Parks, Recreation, and Open Space department, the center is open to the public for free educational programs and events. But, why? Why not use the land for more development? Let’s dive in.
While the 1,100 acres parcel of land was named the Plains Conservation Center in the 1950s, it was not established as passive use open space until 1977. With the mission of preserving the last remaining parcel of native shortgrass prairie in the area, the Plains facility has continued to work to protect the land’s natural state with rules such as no bikes, horses, or dogs.
The Plains Conservation Center offers a variety of educational programs that teach visitors about Colorado’s history and environment. For example, you can learn about the importance of the prairie ecosystem or take a walking tour through the multiple shelters or antique farm equipment. While the entrance is free, special programs and tours for an additional cost are offered on a regular basis.
Sometimes we get so caught up in our day-to-day lives that we forget to take a moment to appreciate nature. The Plains Conservation Center is the perfect place to clear your head and get some fresh air. With over 1,100 acres of land to explore, you’ll never run out of things to see and do. Take a hike on one of the many trails, go birdwatching, or simply sit back and wait for the sunrise.
The Plains Conservation Center is more than just an outdoor education center; it’s also a hub for the community. Volunteer opportunities are available for those who want to give back, and special events are held throughout the year. Attend a family workshop, participate in a community clean-up day, or step outside of your world into the Native world that once flourished on these same steps – there’s something for everyone at the Plains Conservation Center!
The Plains Conservation Center is a hidden gem in Aurora, Colorado. If you’re looking for a place to learn about Colorado’s history and environment, enjoy the fresh air, or connect with your community, look no further than the Plains Conservation Center!
